Wading is allowed in the Pineapple Fountain. But you must take a shower first and not spit or blow your nose in the water. Yech!
The fountain was completed in 1990 after the city was devastated by Hurricane Hugo. Pineapples weren't very common in colonial days, but made it to Charleston, a port city, via South America and the Caribbean. The exotic fruit quickly became a symbol of hospitality.
